Sheffield is a major centre for pop and rock music. The most well-known examples of the city’s musicians include The Human League, Pulp, Def Leppard, Joe Cocker, Arctic Monkeys and Bring Me The Horizon. The record label Warp Records was founded in the city in 1989 and it has had a great influence on the development of electronica music with its releases. The label’s early releases were denoted by music journalists as well as Sheffield Sound. The work of the designer collective The Designers Republic, which - unlike Warp Records - is still based in Sheffield today, was also influential in conjunction with the label’s work. The National Centre for Pop Music was established in Sheffield in 1999. The museum housed there was not as successful as hoped; the building was therefore sold to Sheffield Hallam University. Today the Students’ Union of the university is located in the building. It also serves as a venue for student concerts and events. There are two theatres in Sheffield, as well as four art galleries and several museums.
