Background: Classification of Macedonian
Macedonian, a Slavic language (Southern Slavic sub-group), was considered to be a dialect of Bulgarian for a long time. At present, it is spoken by about 2 million people as an independent language having two main dialects, West Macedonian and East Macedonian. The majority of these live in the Republic of English Turkish translation Macedonia where it is the official language. Smaller groups of people speaking Macedonian can be found in Albania, Bulgaria and Greece.
In terms of linguistic proximity, Macedonian comes closest to Bulgarian. As a special feature, it demonstrates some untypical characteristics of the Slavic languages such as, e.g. the insertion of an indefinite article at the end of the preceding word. Another feature of Macedonian is the use of the Cyrillic English Greek translation alphabet of the Serbian type, but however, consisting of 31 alphabets, of which some are not used in Russian or Bulgarian.
The Macedonian script was introduced in 1945, and it has been supplemented and expanded continuously since then. In its present form, it is treated as a standard language having a completely developed linguistic system for communication in all walks of life.
