Background knowledge: The French language

The origin of French is, as is the case with other Romanic languages, the Latin vernacular, and, in this case, the language of the Roman province, Gaul. The Germanic Visigoths, Burgundy and Franconia, which inherited the province of Gaul, adopted the Latin vernacular (lingua vulgaris) of the Latinised Gaul. In the process, while they themselves incorporated only few words of their languages, they, nonetheless, changed the pronunciation and grammar dramatically, as a result of which the new Gallo-Romance language (lingua rustica romana) that emerged in the 7th century was already substantially different from the latinic language... more
