The origin of French is, as is the case with other Romanic languages, the Latin vernacular, and, in this case, the language of the Roman province, Gaul. The Germanic Visigoths, Burgundy and Franconia, which inherited the province of Gaul, adopted the Latin vernacular (lingua vulgaris) of the Latinised Gaul.
