Background: The Swedish language

The Swedish language belongs to the family of the Germanic languages, which also includes the other Scandinavian languages and German, English and Dutch. The Nordic languages (Danish, Swedish, Norwegian) are closely related, which has its roots in the historical development of these languages and countries. Thus, for example, Danish was the official language in Norway until 1905. Comparatively, it is easy for a German native speaker to learn Swedish. This is not only connected with the many matches between the languages related to one another (Swedish, in addition, has been characterised directly by low German since the Hanseatic times), but, instead, above all, with the fact that the Swedish language has been simplified substantially by a number of developments and reforms in the script, but, above all, in grammar.

In the 9th century, Old West Scandinavian (Norway and Iceland) and Old East Scandinavian (Sweden and Denmark) began to drift apart. After about 1200, came the first differences in the pronunciation in Sweden and Denmark. This gave rise around 1300 to Old Danish and Old Swedish. One of the first written manuscripts of Swedish in Latin handwriting is the oldest provincial law "Västgötalagen". With the rise of the Hanseatic League in the late 13th and early 14th century, a large number of German-speaking migrants came to Sweden and brought many words from their mother tongue into the Swedish vocabulary. Almost all words pertaining to sea travel were taken over from the Dutch. One dialect, which reminds one of Old Swedish, is still spoken today in Närpes (Finland).

Our Swedish translators are based in the following cities: London, Glasgow, Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Brighton, Leicester, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Sydney, Liverpool, Brighton, Los Angeles, Oxford, Edinburgh and many other cities.
