Linguistic history of Russian
Up to the 14th century, Old Slavic was accepted as a common basis for Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian. The first written manuscripts in Russian language go back to the end of the 10th century, after the Slavic folk had converted to Christianity. The literary language used was the Old Church Slavic (even Old Bulgarian or Old Slavic), which the missionaries had brought to the country, and which the East Slavic could understand directly.
With the passage of time, however, the differences between the Old Russian spoken and the written language kept growing. The globalisation and westernisation of the culture during the governance of Peter the Great in the 18th century (the so-called "Europeanization of Russia") caused drastic changes in the language. The old written language, both the liturgical Old Church Slavic and the global administrative language, was not in a position to transport the abundance of scientific, technological, cultural and political concepts, which came into the country.
After Peter the Great reformed the Russian script, the influence of Greek, Polish and Church Slavic on Russian dwindled. The first book using the new Russian script was printed in the year 1708. Russian has borrowed many words from Dutch, German, French, English and Italian since the 18th century. Many representatives of the Russian upper class oriented themselves to the western, but, above all, French culture.
Our Russian translators are based in the following cities: London, Glasgow, Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Brighton, Leicester, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Sydney, Liverpool, Brighton, Los Angeles, Oxford, Edinburgh and many other cities.
