Background of the Romanian language
The Romanian language belongs to the East Romanic family of languages, and is divided into four dialects, and is also spoken in Moldova (Moldovan language) and by minorities in the other neighbouring states. In Romania, which has a population of more than 21.7 million residents, there are about 19.4 million native speakers, and in Moldova, having a population of 4.5 million, there are 3.9 million native speakers.
Beyond these countries, about 4.5 million people speak Romanian as their mother tongue. In Ukraine, Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary, Romanian is spoken as a minority language locally and within the family. There are Romanian colonies in the USA, Canada, South America, Australia, Israel, Turkey and many West European countries, such as in France, Germany and Sweden, as well as in Asia (Moldovians in Siberia, Kazakhstan and Krasnodar region). People started migrating to North America in the 19th century and this increased particularly under the rule of Ceausescu.
