Background information on Norway
Norwegian is a North-Germanic language and belongs to the family of Indo-Germanic languages. Norwegian is spoken as the mother tongue by about 5 million people, the majority of whom live in Norway, where it is the official language. It is so closely related to Danish and Swedish that those who speak Norwegian, Danish or Swedish can communicate well with one another.
The geographical structures and the settlement patterns in Norway with its many mountains and valleys have led to the development of many different dialects. It is not only for this reason, but also owing to the Danish supremacy with Danish as the official language for many centuries, that no uniform pronunciation could be established, which would have been comparable with standard German. Norway was united with Denmark from 1380 to 1814, and was governed from Copenhagen. As a result of this era, which commenced as a personal union, Norway became increasingly weaker, and in 1450, Norwegian was officially superseded by Danish.
Our Norwegian translators are based in the following cities: London, Glasgow, Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Brighton, Leicester, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Sydney, Liverpool, Brighton, Los Angeles, Oxford, Edinburgh and many other cities.
