Background of the Lithuanian language
Lithuanian is spoken as the national language in Lithuania, as the minority language in certain villages in Poland and Belarus, and as an emigrants' language, above all, in the USA (with emphasis on Chicago), and, since 1990, it is also being spoken increasingly in Ireland.
Apart from Latvian and the already extinct Kurdish and East Prussian, Lithuanian belongs to the group of the Baltic languages and to the Indo-European linguistic family. Lithuanian is closely related to Latvian, but also to the Germanic and Slavic languages. Lithuanian, among all surviving European languages, is closes to the Indian branch of the Indo-European languages and has parallels in its grammar to the Indian Sanskrit.
The first written certificates of Lithuanian date back to the 16th century. Consequently, Lithuanian was, above all, the language of the national folk. The urban population and the aristocracy were increasingly polarised, while the Jews spoke Yiddish among one another. The administrative language in Lithuania was Polish for centuries and subsequently Russian.
In the 20th century, a Renaissance of Lithuanian was introduced in the cities, whereby this movement, above all, was faqed by the representatives of the Catholic clergy. At the same time, however, the Russian rulers followed a policy of forced Russification in the 20th century, which culminated in the prohibition of printing Lithuanian. Lithuanian books were especially printed in Königsberg during this period and smuggled into the country.
Our Lithuanian translators are based in the following cities: London, Glasgow, Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Brighton, Leicester, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Sydney, Liverpool, Brighton, Los Angeles, Oxford, Edinburgh and many other cities.
