Background information on the Latvian language
The Latvian language is the official language of the Republic of Latvia and, together with Lithuanian and the extinct languages, Kurdish and Old Prussian, forms the Baltic group of the Indo-Germanic linguistic family. Latvian is spoken by almost 1.7 million people. It uses the Latin alphabet with some special characters.
In the Latvian Dainas (traditional Latvian folk songs or poems) etymologists find numerous and very archaic Indo-Germanic roots and grammatical forms, which are not rarely related to Latin, Greek and Sanskrit. In its present structure, Latvian is more recent than the related and neighbouring Lithuanian. The vocabulary also contains many words borrowed subsequently from German, Swedish, Russian and, recently, from English. With effect from 1st May 2004, Latvian is one of the official languages of the EU.
