Introduction to English

English is today the most widespread in the whole world, while Mandarin (official Chinese language) is the most spoken language. Thus, English is also the first foreign language in schools, in most countries in which it is not spoken by the majority of the population as the mother tongue, or where it is used as the official language. It is the official language of most international organisations. Moreover, English is one of the 23 official languages of the European Union, official language of the African Union, the United States of America and it is one of the 6 official languages of the United Nations. At present, there are about 340 million Anglophone people worldwide, that is, English is spoken as the mother tongue by about 340 million people. If you include those whose second language is English, there are then 510 million speakers.

The most important work of the English language history emerged around the end of the 19th century. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) should supersede the unusable dictionaries. In order to justify their claim of documenting each English word with its history, the authors compiled enormous amounts of text.

As a result of the colonisation and the expansion of the empire in the 19th century, the English language spread itself worldwide, among others, in India, Australia, Africa and South-east Asia. After the settlements in America, a separate variant of the English language came into being, which consciously deviated from British English. Even in other regions, independent dialects were developed. 28% of the 125 Pidgin and Creole languages are based on the English language. On the other hand, English has become the most important source (or donor) language of the European and many non-European languages at the latest since about the middle of the 20th century.

Our English translators are based in the following cities: London, Glasgow, Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Brighton, Leicester, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Sydney, Liverpool, Brighton, Los Angeles, Oxford, Edinburgh and many other cities.
