Background of the Dutch linguistic area

In Belgium, the Flemish, the residents of the Flanders region situated in the northern part of Belgium, speak the Flemish dialect of Dutch. The Flemish dialects are themselves divided into West Flemish, East Flemish and Zeelandic (Zeeuws). However, the standard Dutch language is used as the official and written language in Flanders and in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands and Belgium have created the so-called "Dutch Linguistic Union" (Nederlandse Taalunie) on 9th September 1980. This shall ensure that there is common spelling and grammar, and that the language can be nurtured. In the outermost North-east tip of France, at the border to Belgium, there are a few tens of thousands of people living, who grow up with the West Flemish variant of Dutch.

The Netherlands (Nederland in Dutch, official Koninkrijk of the Netherlands, and in English, Kingdom of the Netherlands) are a state in West Europe, which borders on the North Sea in the west and north, borders on the east with Germany and with Belgium in the south. The sovereign territory of the Netherlands includes the Dutch Antilles including the Aruba island. The Kingdom of the Netherlands was and is characterised with water since centuries owing to its location on the coast of the North Sea. The present provinces, Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland were only half above water during the medieval times. Since then large regions were reclaimed from the sea, which are secured at present by means of sophisticated dykes.

Our Dutch translators are based in the following cities: London, Glasgow, Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Brighton, Leicester, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Sydney, Liverpool, Brighton, Los Angeles, Oxford, Edinburgh and many other cities.
