Croatian versus Serbo-Croatian
The reason for the earlier standard language, both in former Yugoslavia and also the common abstract of the Serbian and Bosnian abroad, and Croatian under the term "Serbo-Croatian" is, on the one hand, that all three have developed on the basis of Stokavish / New Stokavish. On the other, the compromise is to be attributed to Novi Sad (Serbia), as a result of which, in 1954, owing to international efforts of the Communist Party, it was concluded that Croatian, Serbian and Montenegrin languages are now one language. Exceptions were made with respect to the pronunciations, the Ijekavish and the Ekavish pronunciation, and also the use of different scripts was permitted, the Latinic and also the Cyrillic scripts.
This resolution led finally to great annoyance within the Croatian population. In Croatian itself, the term "Serbo-Croatian" is used very rarely. When you had to consider the proximity to Serbian while mentioning Croatian during the time of Yugoslavia, in general, as a result of the constitution of Croatia since 1974, the specific term "Croatian or Serbian language" was used. The term "Serbo-Croatian" ("srpskohrvatski") had a negative connotation in Croatia since very early times. Since the time of national independence of Croatia, the standard Croatian language has also been recognised abroad to a large extent.
