Linguistic family and dialects of Bulgarian

Bulgarian exists, like many other European languages in the varieties a) Standard language in written and spoken form and b) Dialects. The Bulgarian dialects, of which there are many, are traditionally divided into East Bulgarian and West Bulgarian ones. The Mecedonian dialects and Bulgarian dialects form a linguistic continuum, and it is for this reason that, in Bulgaria, Macedonian is considered to be a dialect of Bulgarian.

Bulgarian is the official language and the mother tongue of 85 % of the population in the country. In addition, the speakers of Bulgarian include the members of the Turkish minority, the Roma and other smaller minorities, for whom Bulgarian is the second language, even if the degree of their fluency may differ depending on the ethnic composition of the settlements and also on the gender.

The Bulgarian language is used by about 9 million speakers as the medium of communication, above all, in Bulgaria, where it is the official language. About 250,000 speakers live in the former Soviet Republics of Ukraine and Moldova, and they constitute the largest and most stable group of Bulgarian speakers outside Bulgaria. Their ancestors had moved and settled in many waves there since the middle of the 19th century and until the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottomann rule in 1878. Bulgarian was a recognised minority language in the Yugoslav Republic of Serbia (1991: 25,200 speakers). There are about 20,000 Bulgarian speakers in Romania, and there are Bulgarian-speaking minorities even in Greece, Macedonia, Belarus and in Turkey. There are small groups of Bulgarians in various European countries and overseas, above all, in Argentina. Apart from the Bulgarians, even the ethnic group of primarily Muslim Pomaks speak Bulgarian.

Our Bulgarian translators are based in the following cities: London, Glasgow, Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Brighton, Leicester, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Sydney, Liverpool, Brighton, Los Angeles, Oxford, Edinburgh and many other cities.
