Introduction to the Chinese Languages

The Chinese languages are some of the most widely spoken languages in the world. The term "Chinese", in general, refers to Mandarin - the official name of the Chinese standard language. Mandarin belongs to the family of the Sinitic languages. There are about 900 million native speakers worldwide and they are primarily spread across the People's Republic of China. Mandarin is also spoken in Taiwan and Hong Kong; it is the official language in Macao and Singapore. The purest form of Mandarin is spoken in the capital city of Peking and in the central provinces of China.

Since there are only few written testimonials in archaic China, the history of the Chinese is not completely comprehensible. It is assumed that the language spread from North China towards the South. Moreover, it is undisputed that a number of dialects existed even in the BC (Before Christ) era, which increasingly approached one another during the period of the last two centuries of the AD (Anno Domini). Finally, the leaders of Chinese Government attempted to standardise the various dialects in the form of Mandarin.

The totality of the Chinese languages consists of a large number of different language variants. Apart from Mandarin, Cantonese plays a major role as the Chinese mother tongue - particularly in the south of the country. Other major language groups are found in the regions bordering on Nepal or Tibet.
Since, as before, there is no standard spelling and phonetics in these language variants found in the north and north west, they are, however, not considered to be independent languages but, instead, are classified as Chinese dialects. On the other hand, certain south-east forms of Chinese, such as Wu or Hakka, differ to such an extent from the Chinese high-level language, that these forms can simply not be accepted as dialects.
